This presentation will focus on the Derecho event that struck Linn County, Iowa, on August 10, 2020.  The county was struck with 140 MPH winds that devastated the whole community.  This presentation will provide an overview and short timeline of the events leading up to the Derecho event, the effects of the storm on the community and complications of such a widespread, unplanned event. Also provided will be lessons learned and things to consider should your community be affected in a similar way.

Presenter

Steve O’Konek, Emergency Management Coordinator, Linn County (IA) Emergency Management Agency

Steve was named the Linn County emergency management coordinator in February 2018.

Steve joined the Cedar Rapids Police Department in 1985 and served in a variety of assignments with CRPD including patrol, investigations and administrative operations. He was promoted throughout his career to the rank of captain and served as a patrol division commander during the 2008 flood and helped organize the police department’s response during that time.  Steve has served on the Iowa All-Hazards Incident Management Team (IMT) since 2009 and has been an operations chief, deputy incident commander, and is currently one of the IMT’s, Type 3 Team leaders.  He was an incident commander for the City of Cedar Rapids during RAGBRAI in 2012 and part of the Unified Command for the 2016 flood. He is also an Iowa Certified Emergency Manager
