Darian Baker – 2026 Annual Conference Student Scholar Reflection

Attending the PRIMA Annual Conference as a first-time Student Scholar was an incredible and memorable opportunity for someone interested in pursuing a career in the insurance and risk management industry. This experience allowed me to gain valuable knowledge, build meaningful relationships, and develop a deeper appreciation for the important role risk professionals play in protecting communities. Being surrounded by experienced professionals who are passionate about their work gave me a clearer understanding of the impact that effective risk management has on organizations, employees, and the public they serve.

Throughout the conference, I attended a variety of educational sessions focused on workers' compensation, relationship building, and public sector risk management. These presentations provided insight into the unique challenges faced by public entities, including municipalities, school districts, and government agencies. I learned how effective risk management programs help reduce financial losses, improve workplace safety, and ensure that employees receive the support they need after workplace injuries. The workers' compensation sessions were especially informative because they demonstrated the importance of balancing employee care with responsible claims management. I also gained a greater appreciation for the collaboration required among risk managers, claims professionals, legal teams, and healthcare providers to achieve positive outcomes for both employees and employers.

In addition to the technical knowledge I gained, many different sessions emphasized the importance of communication, leadership, and relationship building within the profession. I learned that successful risk management is not only about identifying and minimizing risks but also about building trust, collaboration, and creating a culture of safety. These discussions reinforced the importance of developing strong interpersonal skills alongside technical expertise, which is something I will continue to prioritize as I prepare for my future career.

I had meaningful conversations with risk managers, insurance specialists, brokers, and industry leaders who generously shared their experiences, career advice, and perspectives on the future of public risk management. Hearing about their career journeys helped me better understand the many opportunities available in the industry and the different paths that can lead to success. Their willingness to answer questions, offer encouragement, and provide guidance made me feel welcomed into the profession and motivated me to continue pursuing my goals.

Equally meaningful was the opportunity to connect with the other Student Scholars attending the conference. Meeting students from different universities who share similar career aspirations allowed me to build friendships that will last well beyond the conference. Exchanging ideas, learning from one another's experiences, and supporting each other throughout the event created a strong sense of community. These relationships reminded me that professional growth is strengthened by collaboration and the connections we build along the way.

Overall, attending the 2026 PRIMA Conference as a Student Scholar was a truly transformative experience. I left the conference with a deeper understanding of public sector insurance, greater confidence in my career goals, valuable industry connections, and lifelong friendships. This opportunity strengthened my commitment to the field of risk management, inspired me to continue learning and developing my professional skills, all while reinforcing my desire to build a career dedicated to serving and protecting others. I am sincerely grateful for the opportunity to participate in this conference and look forward to remaining actively involved with PRIMA throughout my professional career.
