Rheanna Cayetano – 2026 Annual Conference Student Scholar Reflection

The chance to attend the 2026 PRIMA Annual Conference as a student scholar was a phenomenal opportunity to learn, network, and gain a deeper understanding of the public risk management profession.

As a Legal Secretary with the Clark County District Attorney’s Office and a Master of Public Administration student at Valdosta State University, I was interested in exploring how risk management affects public service. Throughout the conference, I had the opportunity to attend educational sessions, connect with professionals from across the country, and learn about emerging challenges facing public organizations.

One of the most valuable aspects of the conference was the opportunity to network with experienced risk management professionals. During the conference events, I met individuals working in local government, higher education, public safety, and risk management consulting. These conversations provided insight into the diverse career paths available within the field and highlighted the importance of collaboration in addressing organizational risks.

The educational sessions reinforced the critical role risk management plays in protecting public resources, supporting employees, and serving communities. I gained a greater appreciation for the proactive strategies organizations use to identify, assess, and mitigate risks before they become significant issues. The conference also emphasized the importance of adaptability as public organizations respond to changing regulations, technological advancements, and evolving workforce needs.

One takeaway that stood out to me was how risk management extends far beyond insurance and claims. It is woven into nearly every aspect of public administration, from policy development and legal compliance to employee engagement and strategic planning. Working in the Clark County District Attorney’s Office has shown me the importance of accountability and sound decision-making in government, and the conference helped me better understand how risk management supports those efforts behind the scenes. As I continue my Master of Public Administration program, I am excited to build on this knowledge and explore ways to integrate risk management principles into my future work in public service. The conference reinforced the value of continuous learning and reminded me that strong public organizations are built through collaboration, preparation, and a commitment to serving their communities effectively.

As someone pursuing a career in public service, I found the conference particularly inspiring. The sessions and conversations demonstrated how risk management supports effective governance and contributes to organizational resilience. Whether addressing workplace safety, legal liability, cybersecurity, or employee well-being, risk professionals play a vital role in helping organizations fulfill their missions.

The student scholar program also provided a unique opportunity to connect with fellow students and emerging professionals. It was encouraging to meet others who share a commitment to public service and professional development. These connections will continue to be valuable as we advance in our careers.

I am grateful to PRIMA for investing in students through the student scholar program and creating opportunities for future public sector leaders to engage with experienced professionals. My experience at the 2026 Annual Conference strengthened my interest in public administration, expanded my professional network, and provided valuable knowledge that I can apply throughout my career.
